I am 27 years old and have just recently moved back to the hudson valley where I spent the first 18 years of my life.
Here's how I became a doula:
I began college not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. I picked psychology because I knew that I was a good listener, and I honestly cared about people's problems. During this time I was inspired to work in the prenatal field. I decided to get a Masters in Social Work. Every paper, report, and research project that I did focused on pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.
I decided to become a doula around this time because I was afraid that without personal experience of having children, I would never be hired to work with the population I wanted to. Once I started reading all the required literature for the doula certification, I became much more passionate.
I realized that empowering women to have babies the way they want to, the way they are supposed to, the way they have been for thousands of years was my purpose in life.
My current goals are to build my birth doula and perinatal counseling services, and to found a birthing center that can provide the opportunity of a enjoyable birthing experience to all women.
